Person Hit by Red Line Train in Central Square

21 Feb

I was just about to run down the steps as I usually do to catch the train that had just pulled into the station. But, just seconds before, a transit police officer manned his post at the entrance to the Central Square T station and closed the doors in front of me.

On Sunday at around 5:30 p.m., a person was struck by a red line train pulling into Central Square from Harvard Square. Some witness reports indicated that the person was a man and he jumped in front of the train. The MBTA confirmed that this person was struck and killed by a train but are not releasing any further details.

About an hour after the incident, one transit police officer said that they still didn’t know when the T line would reopen, and “it could be up to another hour or two hours. We really don’t know.”

Most T riders were left in the dark about the incident and were simply directed towards buses and shuttle services running out of central square, although most were packed. Buses also had a hard time getting in and out of the area with the congestion and traffic surrounding the scene. The square was flooded with local police cruisers, Transit Police vehicles, unmarked police vehicles, ambulances, and fire trucks.

Thanks for posting from the scene. Central Square is in Cambridge — those are MBTA police officers pictured above (not Boston PD).

At the time, it wasn’t confirmed that he jumped, it was just rumored. The fact of the matter was that he was, in fact, struck by the train regardless of whether it was his fault or not. As a journalist, I simply prioritized the urgency of the story and didn’t want to wait for the MBTA to confirm that it was a person that jumped. A suicide can’t be assumed in this kind of story. I wasn’t inferring that it was the MBTA’s fault at all and I apologize if you read it that way.

    Just a heads up
    1) I was looking for someone & came across this . No one is putting up the name . Or anything else . You seem to have scooped the Big news outlets ! Kudos to you !
    2) I think you mean Cambridge Police not Boston Police cars .
Cambridge would not need the help of Boston . If they need assistance the next stop would be the MA State police.
Unfortunate the T (MBTA) seems to get quite a bit of practice with Train Deaths . This seems a suicide . I do wonder though that there has been 2 deaths in that station in less than 6 months .
Keep up the Great work , I signed up for e mail updates 2 your blog.I was looking for Robert McCoy a relative of a relative , time will tell. Thanks 😉
